Step 4 — Plan your trip

About Europe

Practical planning notes, best time to travel and things to do in Europe.

Paris, the Swiss Alps, Venice and Rome strung together by fast trains and scenic drives. Our Europe packages handle Schengen visas, rail passes and every hotel so you only pack.

Step 4b — Europe planning hub

Planning your Europe trip from India

Route choices, realistic budgets, timelines and the mistakes Indian travellers most often make when planning Europe.

Europe at a glance

Countries usually combined
2–5 per trip
Typical trip length
8–14 nights
Visa
Schengen (single visa for 29 countries)
Visa lead time
Apply 8–12 weeks before travel
Currency
Euro (€); Swiss Franc (CHF) in Switzerland
Flight time from India
8–10 h direct, 12–16 h with a stop
Time difference
3.5–4.5 h behind IST
Peak season
June – August (busiest and priciest)

Is Europe right for you?

  • You have at least 8 nights — anything shorter wastes two days on flying.
  • You are comfortable walking 8–12 km a day, often on cobblestones.
  • You want trains, walkable old towns and museums more than beaches.
  • Your passport and financial documents are ready for a Schengen application.

Consider somewhere else if…

  • You only have 4–5 nights — Dubai, Thailand or Vietnam give far better value.
  • You want an all-inclusive resort holiday where everything is on one property.
  • You need Indian vegetarian food at every single meal without planning ahead.
  • You are travelling in December–February and expect sunny sightseeing weather.

Europe by traveller type

First-timers

Paris + Switzerland + Italy, 8–9 nights, maximum 4 hotel changes.

Honeymooners

Switzerland + Italian Lakes, 8 nights, 2 bases, private transfers.

Families with kids

Paris (Disneyland) + Interlaken + Amsterdam, 9–10 nights.

Senior citizens

Switzerland + Austria, 3 nights per base, lifts and low-walking days.

Friends group

Eastern Europe circuit or Spain — better value, later nights, easy trains.

Repeat visitors

Portugal, Croatia, Scandinavia or a single-country deep-dive.

Planning timeline

  1. 4–5 months out

    Lock the route and dates

Fix countries, nights per city and the flight in/out cities. Peak-season hotels sell out early.

  2. 3–4 months out

    Book flights

Consider an open-jaw ticket (into Paris, out of Rome) — it saves a whole backtracking day.

  3. 8–12 weeks out

    Start the Schengen visa

Appointment slots are the bottleneck, not the paperwork. Apply from the country where you spend the most nights.

  4. 6–8 weeks out

    Confirm hotels and trains

Reserve high-speed and scenic trains as soon as booking opens (usually 90 days prior).

  5. 3–4 weeks out

    Attractions and passes

Eiffel Tower summit, Vatican, Anne Frank House and Jungfraujoch sell out — book timed slots now.

  6. 1 week out

    Money and connectivity

Load a forex card, carry €150–200 cash, activate an eSIM and download offline maps.

Choosing the right countries

Pick countries that sit next to each other. The single biggest mistake is combining Spain with Switzerland and Greece in ten nights — you spend the holiday in transit.

  • 2 countries for 6–8 nights, 3 for 9–11 nights, 4–5 only beyond 12 nights.
  • Keep train legs under 4 hours; fly only when the leg is over 6 hours.
  • Switzerland is the most expensive stop — 2–3 nights there is usually enough.
  • Eastern Europe delivers 25–35% better value for the same hotel category.

Recommended duration

Count nights, not days. A '7 days Europe' trip with flights is really 5 usable days.

  • 6–7 nights: one or two neighbouring countries.
  • 8–10 nights: the classic three-country trip — best value for money.
  • 11–14 nights: four to five countries or a relaxed two-country deep-dive.

Budget expectations (per person, ex-India)

Indicative all-in ranges for 8–9 nights including flights, stays, transfers and sightseeing. Final quotes depend on season and availability.

  • Value 3★: ₹1.65–2.1 lakh
  • Comfort 4★: ₹2.2–2.9 lakh
  • Luxury 5★: ₹3.5 lakh and above
  • Peak June–August adds roughly 15–25%.

Walking expectations

Europe is a walking holiday whether or not you plan it that way. Most old towns are vehicle-free and stations have stairs.

  • Expect 8–12 km and 15,000+ steps on city days.
  • Cobblestones destroy wheeled cabin bags — pack light and sturdy.
  • Broken-in walking shoes matter more than any other packing decision.
  • Travelling with seniors? Ask us to build in taxi transfers and shorter days.

A typical day

Days start later and end later than in India. Plan around it instead of fighting it.

  • Breakfast 07:30–10:00 at the hotel, usually included.
  • Sightseeing 09:30–13:00 — book the first slot to skip crowds.
  • Long lunch 13:00–15:00; many shops in Italy and Spain close.
  • Dinner rarely before 19:30; Indian restaurants take walk-ins later.

Indian food and dietary needs

Every major European city has Indian restaurants, but they are not next to every hotel.

  • Paris, London, Amsterdam, Zurich, Rome and Prague all have reliable Indian options.
  • Jain and strict-vegetarian travellers should pre-book meals — tell us in advance.
  • Carry ready-to-eat packs for train and mountain days.
  • Supermarket breakfasts save both money and time.

Hidden costs to budget for

  • City / tourist tax at hotels€2–7 per person per night, paid at the hotel
  • Train seat reservations on a rail pass€10–35 per person per leg
  • Luggage lockers at stations€6–10 per bag per day
  • Public toilets€0.50–1.50 each
  • Water at restaurants€3–5 a bottle — carry a refillable one
  • Airport / mountain-lift extrasJungfraujoch, Mt Titlis etc. €70–200 per person
  • Forex mark-up and card fees2–3.5% unless you use a zero-markup forex card
  • Tips5–10% at sit-down restaurants; €1–2 for porters

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking 5 countries in 7 nights — you'll see stations, not cities.
  • Applying for the Schengen visa too late; appointments, not approvals, cause the delay.
  • Applying at the wrong consulate — it must be where you spend the most nights.
  • Buying a rail pass for a trip with only two long train legs (point-to-point tickets are cheaper).
  • Forgetting mandatory seat reservations on French, Italian and Spanish high-speed trains.
  • Booking hotels far from the city centre or a metro stop to save ₹2,000 a night.
  • Ignoring the 2-hour+ passport queues on the return leg at Indian-facing hubs.
  • Packing heavy — you will carry your own bags up station stairs.
  • Assuming everything is open on Sunday; many shops and some museums close.
  • Skipping travel insurance — it is mandatory for the Schengen visa anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Step 4c — Getting around

Europe transport guide

Rail passes, flights from India and local transport — practical guidance, not sales copy.

What is a rail pass?

Trains are usually the best way to move around Western and Central Europe: city centre to city centre, no airport transfers, no baggage fees. The question is not train vs flight — it is whether a rail pass beats individual tickets for your specific route.

Buy a pass if…

  • You are covering 4+ paid train legs across multiple countries.
  • Your plans may change — passes let you hop on most regional trains.
  • You are doing a Switzerland-heavy trip where point-to-point fares are steep.
  • You want scenic and regional trains, not only the high-speed network.

Skip the pass if…

  • You only have 2–3 train legs — advance point-to-point tickets are cheaper.
  • Your route is mostly high-speed France, Italy or Spain, where reservations are compulsory and add up.
  • You are staying in one or two countries with cheap regional fares.
  • You prefer everything ticketed and fixed before you fly.

Pass options compared

PassWho it suitsNotes
Eurail Global PassMulti-country trips across 3+ countriesFlexible (e.g. 7 travel days in 1 month) or continuous. Book reservations separately.
Eurail One Country PassDeep-dives into Italy, Spain, Switzerland or GermanyGood value in Switzerland, where it also covers many lifts, boats and buses.
Swiss Travel PassSwitzerland-only or Switzerland-heavy itinerariesCovers trains, buses, boats, city transport and discounts on mountain excursions.
Point-to-point ticketsFixed 2–3 leg itinerariesCheapest when booked 60–90 days ahead; non-refundable on advance fares.

Seat reservations

  • France (TGV), Italy (Frecciarossa/Italo) and Spain (AVE) require a paid seat reservation even with a pass.
  • Germany, Austria, Netherlands and most Swiss trains do not — just board with your pass.
  • Reservations open 60–90 days before travel and sell out in peak summer.
  • Budget €10–35 per person per reserved leg on top of the pass price.
  • Activate the pass in the Rail Planner app and add each journey to your trip before boarding.

Night trains

  • ÖBB Nightjet connects Vienna, Munich, Zurich, Milan, Rome, Paris and Amsterdam.
  • Book a private sleeper (not a couchette or seat) if you actually want to sleep.
  • A night train saves a hotel night and a travel day — useful on long repositioning legs.
  • Pass holders still pay a sleeper supplement, typically €60–140 per person.
  • Pack an overnight bag; large luggage goes at the end of the corridor.

Scenic routes worth planning around

Glacier Express (Zermatt ⇄ St. Moritz)

8 hours, panoramic windows, reservation compulsory.

Bernina Express (Chur ⇄ Tirano)

UNESCO route across the Alps into Italy.

GoldenPass Line (Lucerne ⇄ Montreux)

Lakes and vineyards; easy to slot into a Swiss base.

Flåm Railway (Norway)

One of the steepest standard-gauge lines in the world.

Cinque Terre local line (Italy)

Cliffside villages, a 5-minute hop between each.

Semmering Railway (Austria)

Historic mountain line an hour from Vienna.

Common rail mistakes

  • Buying a pass without pricing the same route as point-to-point tickets first.
  • Forgetting reservations and being denied boarding on high-speed trains.
  • Assuming the pass covers airport express trains and metro — it usually does not.
  • Cutting connections to under 20 minutes at large stations like Zurich or Milan.
  • Not validating / activating the pass in the app before the first journey.
Step 4d — Visa & documentation

Europe visa guide for Indian travellers

Process, timeline, documents, funds, insurance, biometrics and the reasons applications get rejected.

How the Schengen visa works

Almost every Europe itinerary we sell needs a Schengen visa. Apply through the embassy or VFS of the country where you will spend the most nights (or your first entry point if nights are equal). Start 8-10 weeks before departure — appointment slots, not processing, are the real bottleneck from India.

Visa timeline

  1. 10-12 weeks before

    Lock the itinerary

Confirm cities, nights and travel dates. The visa file must match the trip you actually intend to take.

  2. 8-10 weeks before

    Book the VFS appointment

Slots in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad disappear fast for May-August travel. Book the slot first, collect papers after.

  3. 6-8 weeks before

    Collect financial documents

Six months of bank statements, ITRs, salary slips and employer NOC or leave letter.

  4. 5-6 weeks before

    Confirm bookings & insurance

Hotel confirmations, flight reservations and a Schengen-compliant insurance policy for the full stay.

  5. 4-6 weeks before

    Attend biometrics

Fingerprints and photo at the VFS centre. Carry originals plus one photocopy set.

  6. 2-4 weeks before

    Passport return

Typical decision time is 15 calendar days; peak season can stretch to 30-45 days.

  7. 1 week before

    Final checks

Verify visa validity dates, entries allowed and the number of days granted before you fly.

Common rejection reasons — and how to avoid them

  • Insufficient or unexplained funds

Show 6 months of steady balance around ₹1.5-2 lakh per adult; explain any large credit with proof.

  • Weak proof of return to India

Add employer NOC, property papers, family ties and evidence of ongoing commitments.

  • Itinerary does not match bookings

Keep flights, hotels and the day plan perfectly consistent — including nights per country.

  • Wrong consulate applied to

Apply where you spend the most nights, or the first entry point if nights are tied.

  • Inadequate insurance

Confirm €30,000 cover, all Schengen states, full duration, repatriation included.

  • Incomplete or unsigned forms

Sign every page required, fill all fields, and never leave a field blank — write NA.

  • Poor-quality photographs

Use a Schengen-spec photo studio; 35x45mm, recent, plain white background.

Step 4e — Budget & money

What a Europe trip actually costs

Package ranges, daily spending, shopping, forex, currencies, VAT refunds and cash versus card.

What a trip actually costs

Europe is expensive by Indian standards, but predictable. Land cost (hotels, transfers, trains, entry tickets) is the bulk of your spend and is fixed by your package. Flights and personal spending are where budgets actually vary.

Estimated package ranges (per person)

Value

₹1.4-1.9 lakh

3-star central or 4-star suburban hotels, group transfers, breakfast, key entries

Comfort

₹2.0-2.8 lakh

4-star central hotels, private transfers, first-class rail on key legs, most entries

Premium

₹3.0-4.5 lakh

5-star or boutique stays, private car with driver, skip-the-line everywhere, some dinners

Luxury

₹5 lakh+

Landmark hotels, chauffeured transfers, private guides, helicopter/scenic add-ons

Indicative land-cost ranges. Your actual quotation depends on travel dates, hotel choice and airfare.

Step 4f — Stay & food

Hotels, areas & Indian food in Europe

Hotel categories, where to stay, breakfast culture, vegetarian and Jain options, supermarkets and drinking water.

Hotel categories

3-star

€90-140 / night

Clean, compact rooms, breakfast usually extra, often 20-30 min from the centre.

4-star

€150-260 / night

Our default. Central-ish location, breakfast buffet, lift, reliable heating/AC.

5-star

€300-600 / night

Prime location, concierge, spa, full-service dining.

Luxury / landmark

€700+ / night

Iconic properties, suites, butler service, view rooms.

Apartments

€120-250 / night

Best for families of 4+ and long stays; kitchen lets you cook Indian food.

Best areas to stay

  • Paris · 1st-8th arrondissement, or Opéra

Walkable to the Louvre and Opéra; strong metro links, safe at night.

  • Zurich / Lucerne · Lucerne old town or Engelberg

Better base than Zurich for mountain excursions; lake and station within walking distance.

  • Interlaken · Interlaken Ost side

Direct trains to Jungfraujoch and Grindelwald.

  • Rome · Near Termini or Spanish Steps

Termini for rail connections and value; Spanish Steps for atmosphere.

  • Venice · Mestre (value) or San Marco (experience)

Mestre is half the price with a 10-minute train; San Marco is worth one night.

  • Amsterdam · Centrum or Jordaan

    Canal-side, walkable, tram lines everywhere.

  • Prague · Old Town or Malá Strana

Everything historic is within a 20-minute walk.

Quick tips before you book

Breakfast is not always included

Confirm before booking — a European buffet costs €18-30 per person if bought at the desk.

Rooms are small

European 4-star rooms average 18-22 sqm. A triple usually means a rollaway bed.

AC is not universal

Older Swiss, Italian and Austrian hotels may have no AC. Ask specifically for July-August travel.

City tax is extra

€2-7 per person per night, payable at the hotel in cash or card. Not included in packages.

Check-in is 3 PM

Morning arrivals from India often wait. Book the previous night if you land before 8 AM.

Kettles are rare

Carry a travel kettle if chai matters — most European hotels do not provide one.

Vegetarian food

  • Italy is the easiest: margherita pizza, pasta al pomodoro, risotto, bruschetta everywhere.
  • France and Switzerland need more planning — look for falafel, crêpes, quiche végétarienne and Lebanese counters.
  • Say 'no meat, no fish, no egg' explicitly; 'vegetarian' in Europe often still includes fish stock or gelatine.
  • Mediterranean, Turkish and Lebanese restaurants are reliable vegetarian options in every major city.
  • Supermarket salad bars, breads, cheeses and fruit make an easy €8-10 lunch.
  • We can pre-book Indian or vegetarian dinners on request for every night of your trip.

Jain-friendly options

  • Jain food is not available off the menu — plan it, do not improvise.
  • Indian restaurants in London, Paris, Zurich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Rome can cook Jain meals with 24 hours' notice.
  • Carry theplas, khakhra, dry snacks, ready-to-eat packs and instant khichdi — customs permits sealed vegetarian packaged food.
  • Apartment stays with a kitchen make Jain travel dramatically easier.
  • Tell us at booking and we will pre-arrange Jain meals city by city, including on long train days.

Indian restaurants across Europe

Paris

La Chapelle / Gare du Nord area has dozens of Indian and Sri Lankan restaurants.

Zurich & Lucerne

Several North Indian restaurants near the main stations; expect CHF 25-40 per main.

Interlaken

Small but genuinely good Indian restaurants right on Höheweg.

Rome & Milan

Indian kitchens near Termini and Milan Central; Milan also has Jain-friendly Gujarati options.

Amsterdam

Surinamese-Indian food is excellent and very vegetarian-friendly.

Frankfurt & Munich

Strong Indian restaurant scene thanks to large expat communities.

Supermarkets & self-catering

  • Carrefour and Monoprix (France), Coop and Migros (Switzerland), Conad and Coop (Italy), Albert Heijn (Netherlands), REWE and Lidl (Germany).
  • Lidl and Aldi are the cheapest across Europe for fruit, bread, yoghurt and snacks.
  • Most supermarkets close by 8 PM and are shut on Sundays — stock up on Saturday.
  • Station supermarkets (Zurich HB, Milano Centrale) are the exception and stay open late and on Sundays.
  • A supermarket lunch costs €6-10 versus €20-30 at a restaurant — use it on travel days.

Drinking water

  • Tap water is safe to drink in almost all of Western Europe, including Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
  • Carry a refillable bottle — Swiss and Italian public fountains are drinkable and free.
  • Restaurants charge €3-5 for bottled water; ask for 'tap water' or 'carafe d'eau' in France.
  • Sparkling is the default in Italy and Germany — ask for 'still' or 'natural' if you want plain water.
  • Exceptions worth avoiding tap: some older buildings in southern Italy and parts of Eastern Europe.
Step 4g — Seasonal guide

Europe season by season

Tulips, lavender, Christmas markets, snow, Northern Lights and the summer Alps — plus the best month for your interests.

Spring in Europe

Most markets close on Christmas Eve; a few stay open to New Year.

Snow & skiing

December – March

Jungfrau region, Zermatt, Tyrol, French Alps

Jungfraujoch and Titlis have snow year-round if you only want a snow experience.

Northern Lights

September – March

Tromsø (Norway), Rovaniemi (Finland), Iceland

Needs a dedicated Nordic extension — not visible from Central Europe.

Summer Alps

June – September

Interlaken, Grindelwald, Zermatt, Dolomites

All cable cars, hiking trails and lake activities are open.

Vineyard harvest

September – October

Bordeaux, Tuscany, Rhine Valley

Combine with slower, food-led itineraries.

  • Four-wheel spinners only: you will drag luggage on cobblestones, stairs and train platforms.
  • European trains have no porters and limited luggage racks — if you cannot lift it, do not pack it.
  • Keep one day's clothes, medicines and chargers in cabin baggage in case of a delayed bag.
  • Leave 20-25% of the case empty for shopping, or carry a foldable duffel.
  • Left-luggage lockers at major stations cost €5-9 a day and are perfect for early check-out days.
