The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are home to some of the world's last uncontacted indigenous peoples. As travellers, we have a real responsibility to visit ethically — and the rules in 2026 are stricter than most operators advertise. Here's what every Andaman traveller should know.

The four protected tribes

  • Sentinelese — North Sentinel Island. Completely uncontacted; visiting is illegal under Indian law and punishable.
  • Jarawa — Western Middle & South Andaman. Semi-contacted; approximately 400 people. Photographing or feeding is illegal.
  • Onge — Little Andaman. ~100 people. Reserve area off-limits.
  • Great Andamanese — Strait Island. Around 50 people. Off-limits.

The ATR (Andaman Trunk Road) rules

The ATR cuts through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve. Tourist convoys are allowed under strict conditions:

  • Convoy timings only (4 fixed slots/day)
  • No stopping, no rolling down windows, no photography or video
  • No food or items handed out
  • Vehicle log books mandatory

Operators caught violating face permanent permit revocation. We brief every guest before any ATR transit.

What the law actually says

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Protection of Aboriginal Tribes) Regulation, 1956 makes it illegal to enter Tribal Reserve Areas without permits. The 2018 incident where an American visitor was killed attempting to reach North Sentinel Island reaffirmed: these are not "tourist attractions."

How to visit Andaman ethically

  • Stick to Port Blair, Havelock, Neil and Ross Islands — all open and beautiful
  • Choose operators that brief guests on tribal protocol (we do this in writing)
  • Visit the Anthropological Museum in Port Blair — best place to learn
  • Skip "tribal tour" packages from any operator — they don't exist legally
  • If transiting via ATR, do not photograph anything Jarawa-related
