The Char Dham Yatra — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — is the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage circuit, drawing over 50 lakh devotees in 2024 alone. With portals opening in late April 2026, here's the complete Char Dham Yatra travel guide covering registration, costs, helicopter options and routes.

Char Dham Yatra 2026 — quick facts

  • Portal opening (expected): Late April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya for Yamunotri/Gangotri)
  • Closing: November 2026 (around Bhai Dooj/Diwali)

  • Mandatory registration: registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in

Direct road access; no trek. Bhagirathi River at its purest. Submerged Shivling visible only in winter.

3. Kedarnath (3,583 m) — Lord Shiva

The toughest darshan. 18 km trek from Gaurikund OR helicopter from Phata/Sersi/Guptkashi (₹6,500–₹8,500 round-trip). Most spiritually intense of the four.

4. Badrinath (3,300 m) — Lord Vishnu

Direct road access. Hot Tapt Kund spring before darshan. Mana village (last Indian village) nearby.

Best time for Char Dham Yatra

  • May–June: Peak — pleasant weather but heaviest crowds
  • July–August: Avoid — landslides during monsoon
  • September–October: Best — clear weather, fewer crowds, autumn colours
  • November: Closing — last chance, very cold

Fitness and medical preparation

  • Walk 4–5 km daily for 1–2 months pre-yatra
  • Yamunotri (6 km) and Kedarnath (18 km) treks need stamina
  • BP, sugar, heart conditions need doctor clearance
  • Carry Diamox (after consultation) for AMS prevention
  • Pony, palki, pithu services available — pre-book at trek points

What to pack for Char Dham

  • Heavy waterproof jacket + raincoat (mandatory year-round)
  • Trekking shoes with grip (no slippers)
  • Thermal innerwear, woollen cap, gloves
  • Walking stick
  • Personal medication, ORS, glucose
  • Power bank, torch (load-shedding common at Kedarnath)
  • Cash (₹15,000+) — ATMs unreliable beyond Joshimath

Important Char Dham rules in 2026

  • Daily darshan quota at each dham (Yamunotri 9,000, Gangotri 11,000, Kedarnath 18,000, Badrinath 20,000)
  • VIP darshan tickets discontinued at Kedarnath
  • Mobile photography inside sanctum sanctorum prohibited
  • Single-use plastics banned at all 4 sites

Combine Char Dham with Do Dham or Hemkund Sahib

Time-constrained pilgrims often do "Do Dham" (Kedarnath + Badrinath only, 5 days). Sikh pilgrims combine Badrinath with Hemkund Sahib (4,329 m, opens June). See our full Char Dham Yatra package with multiple duration options.

Common Char Dham mistakes

  • Not pre-booking helicopter — sells out in 30 min
  • Underestimating Kedarnath trek — start at 5 AM, complete in 9 hours
  • Going in July–August — landslides, road closures, dangerous
  • Skipping registration — denied at checkpoints
  • Carrying ₹2000 notes in remote areas — preferred ₹100/₹500
