Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is the most spiritually charged journey on earth — a once-in-a-lifetime parikrama around Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva, and a sacred dip in Lake Mansarovar at 4,590 m. Since the MEA route via Lipulekh and Nathula remains suspended, all 2026 yatras operate via Nepal. Here's everything Indian pilgrims need to know.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 — quick facts

  • Routes: Overland via Kathmandu–Kerung; or Helicopter via Nepalgunj–Simikot–Hilsa
  • Duration: 11–14 days overland; 9–11 days helicopter
  • Cost: ₹1,80,000–₹2,40,000 (overland) | ₹2,80,000–₹3,50,000 (helicopter)
  • Best season: May to September (June–August peak)
  • Maximum altitude: 5,630 m (Dolma La pass)

Which route should you choose?

Fly to Kathmandu → drive to Kerung border (8 hr) → enter Tibet → Saga → Mansarovar → Darchen → 3-day parikrama → return. Better acclimatization, more affordable, more time at sacred sites. Best for fit pilgrims aged 18–65.

Helicopter route via Simikot

Kathmandu → Nepalgunj → Simikot (helicopter) → Hilsa → cross to Tibet → Mansarovar → parikrama → return. Saves 4–5 days but jumps altitude faster — higher AMS risk. Best for senior pilgrims (60+) who can't do long road journeys.

Permits and documents (Indian citizens)

  • Original passport with 6+ months validity (no Indian visa needed for Tibet via Nepal route)
  • Tibet Travel Permit (arranged by operator, takes 15–20 days)
  • Chinese Group Visa (issued at Chinese embassy in Kathmandu — your passport stays with your group leader)
  • Medical fitness certificate (mandatory)
  • 10 passport photos

Cannot be done independently — Tibet requires a registered group operator. See our Kailash Mansarovar Yatra package with full visa support.

Fitness requirements — be honest with yourself

This is not a casual trip. The 3-day parikrama is 52 km of trekking at 4,500–5,630 m altitude. Before booking:

  • Walk 5–8 km daily for 2 months pre-yatra
  • Climb stairs without breathlessness
  • Get a doctor's certificate (BP, sugar, heart, lungs cleared)
  • Avoid if you have severe asthma, recent surgery, or unmanaged hypertension
  • Carry Diamox (after consulting your doctor) for AMS prevention

Detailed cost breakdown — overland route

  • Delhi–Kathmandu round-trip flight: ₹18,000
  • Kathmandu hotel (2 nights): ₹6,000
  • Tibet permits + Chinese visa: ₹35,000
  • Yatra ground package (Kerung to Kerung): ₹1,10,000
  • Yaks/porters during parikrama: ₹15,000 (optional but recommended)
  • Travel insurance with high-altitude cover: ₹4,500
  • Personal expenses, tips, oxygen cylinder: ₹8,000

Total: ₹1,96,500–₹2,30,000 per person for the standard overland yatra.

Day-wise itinerary (overland, 14 days)

  • Day 1–2: Arrive Kathmandu, briefing, sightseeing
  • Day 3: Drive to Kerung (Nepal-Tibet border)
  • Day 4–5: Acclimatization in Kerung, Tibet permits
  • Day 6: Drive Kerung → Saga (4,640 m)
  • Day 7: Saga → Lake Mansarovar — sacred dip, puja, hawan
  • Day 8: Mansarovar → Darchen (start of parikrama)
  • Day 9: Parikrama Day 1 — Darchen to Dirapuk (15 km)
  • Day 10: Parikrama Day 2 — Dirapuk → Dolma La pass (5,630 m) → Zuthulpuk (22 km — toughest day)
  • Day 11: Parikrama Day 3 — Zuthulpuk → Darchen (15 km)
  • Day 12–13: Return Saga → Kerung → Kathmandu
  • Day 14: Fly Kathmandu → home

Essential packing list

  • Heavy down jacket, thermals (3 sets), windproof outer layer
  • Trekking shoes (broken-in, ankle support)
  • UV sunglasses (mandatory at high altitude), sunscreen SPF 50+
  • Personal medication, Diamox, Disprin, ORS
  • Power bank (no electricity for 3 days during parikrama)
  • Plastic bottle for Mansarovar water (pilgrims carry holy water back)

Common mistakes that ruin yatras

  • Skipping fitness prep — leads to AMS evacuation costing ₹5+ lakh
  • Choosing helicopter route despite being fit — you miss the spiritual buildup
  • Going with the cheapest operator — Tibet permit issues turn back many groups at the border
  • Not carrying yaks during parikrama — the 5,630m climb is brutal without backup
