Bhutan — the world's only carbon-negative country — remains the most magical Himalayan getaway from India. With Indians paying a reduced SDF (Sustainable Development Fee) of ₹1,200/day instead of the $100/day others pay, it's also more affordable than ever. Here's the complete Bhutan travel guide for Indians in 2026.

Bhutan quick facts for Indians

  • Entry: No visa needed; permit issued at Phuentsholing or Paro on arrival
  • SDF (Sustainable Development Fee): ₹1,200 per person per night (Indians); free for kids under 5, half for ages 6–12
  • Currency: Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) at par with INR; Indian rupees (notes ≤ ₹500) accepted everywhere
  • Best time: March–May (spring), September–November (autumn)
  • Mobile: Indian SIMs roam at high cost; buy local TashiCell SIM at airport

Two ways to enter Bhutan

By road via Phuentsholing (most common, cheaper)

Fly to Bagdogra (West Bengal) → drive to Phuentsholing border (4.5 hr) → permits at Bhutan immigration → drive to Thimphu (6 hr). Permit takes 2–4 hours; carry passport (or voter ID + Aadhaar), 4 photos and your hotel + tour confirmation.

By air to Paro (faster, dramatic landing)

Direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Guwahati on Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines. Round-trip ₹22,000–₹42,000/person. Permit issued at Paro airport.

  • Day 4: Thimphu → Punakha via Dochula Pass (108 chortens) — Punakha Dzong, suspension bridge
  • Day 5: Punakha → Paro — Chimi Lhakhang en route
  • Day 6: Paro — Tiger's Nest hike (5 hr round-trip), Kyichu Lhakhang
  • Day 7: Paro → Phuentsholing → Bagdogra → home

Tiger's Nest (Paro Taktsang) hike — what to expect

The iconic monastery clinging to a cliff at 3,120 m is the highlight of every Bhutan trip. The hike is 6 km round-trip with 700m elevation gain — moderate difficulty, takes 4–6 hours total.

  • Start by 7 AM to beat the crowd and heat
  • Wear good trekking shoes and carry 2L water
  • Halfway café serves tea and lunch
  • Horses available till halfway point (₹1,200) — but you must walk down
  • Photography NOT allowed inside the monastery

Best time to visit Bhutan

  • March–May: Spring, blooming rhododendrons, Paro Tsechu festival
  • September–November: Autumn, clearest mountain views, Thimphu Tsechu
  • December–February: Cold but cheap, snow at Dochula Pass
  • June–August: Monsoon, avoid for Tiger's Nest

Permits and documents needed

  • Original Indian Passport (6+ months validity) OR Voter ID + Aadhaar
  • 2 passport-size photos
  • Confirmed hotel bookings for entire stay (mandatory)
  • Tour operator confirmation (recommended for hassle-free permits)
  • SDF receipt

Self-drive is NOT permitted for Indians — you must travel with a registered Bhutanese guide and vehicle.

What to pack for Bhutan

  • Layers — temperatures swing from 5°C morning to 22°C noon
  • Trekking shoes for Tiger's Nest
  • Sunscreen, lip balm (mountain sun is harsh)
  • Modest clothing for dzongs (covered shoulders + long pants/skirts)
  • Indian rupees in ≤ ₹500 notes (₹2000 notes not accepted)
  • Power bank — long road journeys

Cultural etiquette in Bhutan

  • Walk clockwise around stupas, prayer wheels and chortens
  • Remove shoes and hats inside dzongs and temples
  • Don't point feet at Buddha statues
  • Photography of monks: ask first
  • Drone use requires special permit

Common mistakes by Indian tourists

  • Carrying ₹2000 notes — not accepted anywhere
  • Underestimating Tiger's Nest difficulty — train your legs for 1 month
  • Trying to add Bumthang in 6 days — needs 8+ days minimum
  • Self-arranging permits without a registered operator — rejection rate is high
